The National Football League and the NFL Referees Association remain in negotiations over a new collective bargaining agreement, with the current deal set to expire after May 31, 2026.[1][2]
Pro Football Talk reported that the league could turn to replacement referees if talks extend into the preseason, marking the first such use since a 2012 labor dispute.[1]
ESPN, citing internal emails it reviewed, reported the NFL has begun laying the groundwork for potential replacement officials ahead of the 2026 season.[2]
During the 2012 dispute, which lasted from August 7 to September 27, replacement officials from Division III colleges, high schools and developmental leagues officiated the first three weeks of the season, including a controversial "Fail Mary" play.[1][3]
On September 24, 2012, replacement officials ruled a final-play Hail Mary touchdown pass from Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson to wide receiver Golden Tate a touchdown on a disputed simultaneous catch, giving Seattle a 14-12 win over the Green Bay Packers.[3][4]
ESPN college football analyst Pat McAfee, a former punter for the Indianapolis Colts from 2007 to 2016, criticized the prospect of replacement referees on X, referencing the 2012 issues and calling for greater accountability from current officials.[5]
The NFL has stated its focus on improving officiating performance and accountability through changes to the agreement.[1]
